How to Choose Your Brand Colours

People recognise brand colours before a logo itself. So when creating a brand, or branding for your business, it is vital that you spend time considering the colours to use.

Visual Impact have been manufacturing signs for businesses in Wakefield for over 20 years. Because of our experience we are often called to lend a hand in the design process, and during the last 20 years we have learned a thing or two about branding. So, we’ve thrown together a few ideas that you can consider when choosing your branding colours.

  1. Understanding the psychology of colour. You’ll need to choose a main colour – one that represents your brand and style. Every colour has a different psychological impact, so it’s important you choose the right one.

Consider colours of that give off a positive vibe. Especially indoors, as this is where all your business opportunities will stem form. Yellows, when used in the right shade, can radiate happiness and excitement. Red, has been said to stimulate appetite, which is why many popular fast food restaurants use it so much. Blue, is seen as ‘corporate’ and professional, holding more authority and developing a sense of trust within the client/customer.

  1. Keep colours to a minimum. It’s tempting to have a large range of different colours. Companies often mistakenly think that using lots of colours is a good way of standing out. However, too many colours can cause confusion and just looks messy. Limiting your branding to a few colours will strengthen your brand, whereas too many will dilute it.
  2. Look out for competitors. It’s important you do your research into competitors, to avoid mimicking the same colours as them. You’ll stand out more by creating your own unique style, than you will interpreting another’s brand.

It’s all about the combination of your main colour, accent colours and logo design. If it’s different enough from your competitors that it is clearly a separate company, you’ll be fine. Choosing your brand colour scheme sounds like a simple task, but it could take a long time.
